Suspected Leader Of Al Qaeda In Iraq Arrested
Online news outlets are reporting the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq has been arrested after a wave of violent suicide bombings in Iraq killed 70 people.
The escalating violence is believed to be coordinated by AQI leader in Iraq, Abu Omar al-Baghdadi. Al-Baghdadi has been a major target for U.S. and Iraqi forces since the death of former AQI leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, was killed in 2006. The brazen, bloody attack on Al Zarqawi and subsequent gruesome pictures of the battered corpse were shown worldwide as the U.S. miltary meant to destroy AQI morale and warn others who would take up arms against military forces in Iraq.
Little is known about Al-Baghdadi’s origins or influence over insurgent groups operating within Iraq. AQI & other insurgents are believed to have staged many of the high-profile attacks in recent weeks, including the two suicide blasts today that killed 70 people north of Baghdad in Diyala province.
