I’ve recently written about the radical right wing being encouraged by political & thought leaders to resort to violence in order to express its political interests. For elected officials it’s also pandering of the worst sort, ever-increasing the rhetoric and dangerousness. I’ve also expressed increasing concern that these same “leaders” have abdicated their moral responsibility in calling for such a radicalized agenda (such as torture and others) subverting the rule of law. Today we have such a despicable example of that radicalized agenda being carried out by violent pro-lifers against abortion clinic doctors with the murder of Dr. George Tiller in Kansas. Abortion is a thorny issue. There is no doubt about it. It is not my intention to tackle the subject here. However, the inherent hypocrisy involved with radical religious zealots claiming to be Christians who ...

I’ve written extensively about the coming split in the Republican Party. This week, tacitly acknowledging his role in the Republican Party of 2009, Rush Limbaugh on Wednesday resigned as ‘titular head of the Republican Party’ in which he snidely passed the baton to Former Secretary of State Colin Powell. Per Media Matters: Mr. Limbaugh’s attacks are a result of a recent verbal scuffle with Mr. Powell, when Powell declared “the Republican Party is in deep trouble”, indicating Limbaugh was to blame, claiming he “diminishes the party” and influences “a kind of nastiness that we would be better to do without” in public discourse in a speech given to executives in early May. The melee reached fever pitch on Wednesday, when Mr. Limbaugh returned fire for the speech Mr. Powell had given ...

Last week I wrote an article about former Secretary of Homeland Security and moderate Republican Tom Ridge giving a coveted exclusive interview to MSNBC instead of right-wing outlet Fox News. In it, Mr. Ridge pointed to an ever-increasing drive to cast moderates out of the Republican party. As if to underscore his assertion, this weekend Dick Cheney also sought to cast moderates out of the party when he picked Rush Limbaugh “politically” over former Secretary of State Colin Powell, widely viewed to be a moderate Republican. Mr. Cheney said he would choose Rush Limbaugh in terms of which ideology he most aligns himself with in an interview with Bob Schieffer on CBS News’ Face the Nation. What makes his assertion all the more incredible is that Mr. Powell served in Bush and Cheney’s cabinet as Secretary of State for ...

In previous posts I’ve suggested right wing media outlets such as Fox News (particularly Roger Ailes) become fixated on the smallest of minutiae in order to blow it up into a huge story. Their latest fixation: Obama’s choice of mustard for the burger he ordered out at Hell Burger in DC. They claim with a straight face that his choice of spicy mustard makes him an elitist.
Watch it:
This happened on the same day the other big news story was former Bush-era Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge signaling he would not run against Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) in the upcoming primary in the state on Pennsylvania as a Republican. While conducting an interview on Chris Matthews’ Hardball program on MSNBC. Mr. Ridge said he believed the Republican party had become too ‘shrill’. In it he also acknowledged the ...

Eric Odom, the self-proclaimed creator of the Tax Day Tea Parties, wrote a letter to his followers today. According to the letter, he finds the Tea Parties in a very disconcerted state at the moment. Additionally, he recognized the national organizing parties trying to take over the theme and the message of the protests. Interestingly, Mr. Odom makes a curious statement at the end regarding what he termed the “top-down format”, a seemingly innocuous jab at Fox News and FreedomWorks, who sponsored the events (here, here and here):
[…]And as a side note, we at some point need to understand the VITAL importance of regaining control of our LOCAL government. I get that fighting Federal battles is sexy and everyone is doing it, but I also get that we're losing our asses in our own back yards!
So I cringe when I ...
